[10e] The Epi-Jōmon and Satsumon cultures preceded the emergence of these people. These indigenous people of Hokkaido have a higher proportion of Jōmon DNA than most other modern residents of Japan.

[10h] The Epi-Jōmon culture is often linked to these equestrian “shrimp barbarians” of northern Honshū. Historians debate whether this ancient ethnic group became the proto-Ainu or fought proto-Ainu peoples called the Mishihase.
ANSWER: Emishi people [or Ebisu; or Yebisu; or Ezo; or Yezo; or Yemishi] (The “Mishihase” may also be ancestors of the Nivkh or other non-Ainu Tungusic peoples.)
[10m] The term “Zoku” or “Epi-” Jōmon refers to the persistence of Jōmon patterns in northern Japan past when this culture superseded it further south. Wet rice agriculture became dominant in this culture’s namesake period.
