Round 18: Tossup 7
Eighteen pieces in this genre are organized into six duo-sonatas in a Georg Philipp Telemann collection titled for “melodious” examples of them. The melody of a piece in this genre is held in J. S. Bach’s hand in Elias Gottlob Haussmann’s portrait of him. In 1974, 14 of these pieces by Bach were discovered and cataloged as BWV 1087. Bach’s variations on “Vom Himmel hoch da komm’ ich her” are also in this genre. In a 1747 collection, a piece in this genre is written on a single line with an alto clef and upside-down bass clef, labeled “Quaerendo invenietis” (“kwye-REN-doh in-ven-YET-ees”). This is the genre of every third variation in the Goldberg Variations and of most pieces in The Musical Offering, which includes a “crab” example. For 10 points, a D-major piece in what contrapuntal genre is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel? ■END■
