In this work, unaccompanied muted violins play a passage in which the figure G, A-flat, G, A-flat descends by half steps, depicting the lowering of a rope. An Oscar-winning film based on this piece was directed by Suzie Templeton. The original rhyming text for this piece was replaced by a text by the composer, which opens by describing a Young Pioneer opening a gate and walking out into a big green meadow. Three horns represent the second title character of this piece and a bassoon represents the grandfather (10[1])of the first title character.
